Apple may have just announced a new 24-inch M3 iMac about a week ago, but there are already many rumors circulating about what the company is working on beyond that. The latest leak goes beyond that, supposedly predicting Apple’s OLED product plans until 2029. This leak includes a monstrous 42-inch iMac and much more. But can we trust it?
No, probably not. Sorry.
We could stop things there, and if I’m honest, this message could have probably been a tweet (sorry, message), but let’s look at what has been « leaked » and whether it is likely to happen or not.
Starting big – 42 inches big
We of course have to start with the iMac. Despite the presence of a foldable OLED iPad on the roadmap, it’s the iMac that is getting the most attention. And that should probably tell you a lot about its credibility.
It’s been over a year now that we’ve been hearing about a foldable iPad, and it is increasingly likely that it will debut well before a foldable iPhone. So, armed with this knowledge, we look at the bottom of the roadmap that was shared by X leaker @Tech_Reve a few days ago. Because behind the iPads and MacBooks, it’s the iMac that is looking the most interesting.
There, you will see that Apple is said to be planning to deliver three new OLED iMacs towards the end of 2027 or the beginning of 2028 with sizes of 21.5, 27, and 32 inches. That’s already a lot of sizes for Apple to ship an iMac in. And then we add the monster at the bottom – a 42-inch monster that would likely overshadow even the largest of desks. But will it ever ship?
I can’t imagine it would, but you don’t have to take my word for it. While @Tech_Reve has a relatively solid track record when it comes to leaking hardware plans – especially in the Android world – there is one person whose opinion I will take over theirs every time. This person is Ross Young, a display analyst with an outstanding track record. And according to him, something doesn’t add up.
In an X article asking Young if any of the claims on the roadmap held water, his response was quick and devastating. « No. »
The display analyst – someone whose job it is to know what display manufacturers are making and how – states that three OLED devices are missing from the list and four of those that are there, shouldn’t be. Can anyone guess which ones they are? A recent clue, Apple recently confirmed that it has no intention of releasing a 27-inch Apple Silicon iMac.
The source
It is important to note that @Tech_Reve is not the first to claim that a 42-inch iMac is on the way.
Last April, Omdia analysts had shared a similar roadmap. And when I say similar, I really mean it.
Is it possible that these two pieces of information come from the same source? It is indeed the case, and it is also possible that the second comes from the first. But whatever happens, I have a feeling that we won’t be seeing a 42-inch iMac in 2028/2029.
The wildcard? The Pro Display XDR which already measures 32 inches. It’s possible that some of these iMacs are not iMacs at all. And with Apple opting for the 24-inch size, it seems unlikely that we will see anything launching in a 21.5-inch dimension, whether it’s an iMac or a Studio Display.
Time will tell of course, as always. And this message could age like milk, but I doubt it.
Someone will undoubtedly bookmark this and remind me in a few years if I’m wrong, so we’ll all eventually find out.
